One Mill. One Mission. All Pennfield Equine Feed Technologies products are crafted in a single, state-of-the-art mill in Mt. Joy, Pennsylvania, with the sole mission to unlock the full richness of the most superior raw ingredients available, blending them into formulas that in turn unlock the full potential of each horse we feed. This mission is achieved three ways: Single-source production. Having only one mill produce all our equine feeds gives us unparalleled quality control, compared to other feed companies that produce feeds in many different mills. Advanced milling techniques. Each of our whole grains – corn, barley, oats – are processed to maximize palatability and available nutrition. For starters, we SuperFlake® them, a steaming and flattening process that creates a uniform density and thickness. In fact, it looks and smells so good, and the mill is so clean, visitors are known to pop a warm kernel of SuperFlake® corn in their mouth, right off the line. After going through SuperFlake®, these grains are then routinely bushel-weight and moisture-content tested to ensure maximum starch and nutrient availability. Pellets, the other main ingredient, are all durability tested to reduce powdering in the bag for less waste and to head off respiratory distress. Finally, we uniquely use a four-way air mixer (instead of the standard rotating paddles) which suspends the feed in midair so the atomized spray line can evenly distribute oils, molasses and other liquid ingredients on each portion of feed, for superior consistency throughout the lot. The importance of this particular technology cannot be overemphasized as it is responsible for a huge advantage in overall product quality over traditionally paddle-blended feeds. Safety, safety, safety. And did we mention safety? Our Mt. Joy mill is Safe Feed – Safe Food certified, an honor that is shared with a small percentage of mills nationwide. This certification process examines procedures, cleanliness, and testing for safety. Further, even with long-trusted suppliers bringing us their very best ingredients, we lab-test each grain load for the presence of potentially lethal mycotoxins, prior to entry in the building. We reject approximately one in ten loads, proof that bearing the time and expense of this routine lab testing to ensure our feeds are safe for your horses is simply the right thing to do.
